Fractions
This fraction is said as "2 out of 5" or "two fifths"
The numerator is said normally. The denominator is said as an ordinal number: first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth, tenth, fourteenth, twentieth, or hundredth. |
A fraction has a top number called a numerator. The numerator tells us how many parts of a shape or whole that we want or have. It is the parts of the shape that are colored in.
A fraction also has a bottom number called a denominator. The denominator tells us how many equal parts the shape is cut into. The numerator and denominator have a line between them. When we say the fraction out loud, the line is said using the words "out of". |
